Marriage Myths:
What Nobody Tells You About the First 10 Years of Marriage
Marriage myths can creep in and create unrealistic expectations about what a healthy marriage is supposed to look like. You may believe that becoming “one” means losing part of yourself, that the right spouse won’t have conflict with you, or that if your spouse really loves you, they should automatically know what you need.
But what if some of the things you’ve believed about marriage are actually making marriage harder?
In this episode of Expedition Marriage, we’re joined by Julie Baumgardner, founder of Marriage on the Daily (https://marriageonthedaily.com), to unpack some of the most common marriage myths couples believe—especially during the first 10 years of marriage.
Julie has spent nearly four decades working with couples and families, and she’s passionate about helping couples build healthy, lasting marriages through the small choices they make every day.
Together, we’re talking about why becoming “one” doesn’t mean becoming the same, why your differences can actually strengthen your marriage, and why conflict isn’t necessarily evidence that something is wrong.
In fact, healthy conflict can help couples know one another more deeply, solve problems together, and build greater intimacy.
We’re also tackling the commonly misunderstood advice to “never go to bed angry.” Does the Bible really mean couples have to stay awake until 3 a.m. resolving every disagreement? Or is there a healthier—and more biblical—way to understand anger and conflict?
You’ll also hear why expecting your spouse to read your mind sets both of you up for frustration, how to communicate what you actually need, and why a child-centered marriage isn’t necessarily a healthy marriage.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Why “the two shall become one” doesn’t mean losing your individuality
- How differences between spouses can strengthen and refine a marriage
- Why healthy marriages still have conflict
- How conflict can actually increase intimacy
- What “don’t let the sun go down on your anger” really means for married couples
- Why healthy people communicate what they need instead of expecting mind-reading
- How to get underneath anger and address the real issue
- Why your marriage still needs to be a priority after having children
- How healthy conflict and repair can build resilience in your children
- Why perspective can completely change the way you experience your marriage
One of Julie’s most helpful reminders is simple:
Different isn’t deficient. Different is just different.
Your spouse isn’t your DIY project. Marriage gives you an opportunity to learn who God created your spouse to be, allow your differences to refine one another, and grow together through every season.
Whether you’re newly married, somewhere in the first 10 years, or decades into marriage, identifying these marriage myths can help you replace unrealistic expectations with healthier ones and build a stronger, more connected marriage.
