What counselingis not
One of the top reasons couples wait too long to get help is that they are concerned about what they think will happen during a session.
Usually, at least one of you imagines it might be a bit like a courtroom. You each present your case, the counselor rules, and somebody ends up as the villain.
We want to clear that up for you, because that belief keeps good people in struggling marriages stuck.
To clarify, here is what we do NOT do

Marriage counseling is not about finding who is wrong or who is the guilty party. It is about helping two flawed people, because we ALL are, understand themselves, understand each other, and learn a healthier way to love one another.
If you have been circling this for a while, waiting for things to get bad enough to justify reaching out, you do not have to wait. The couples who come in early are not the ones in crisis. They are the ones who decided to stop repeating the same fight that will lead them into crisis.

A conversation for the two of you
Sit down together when things are calm and take turns asking:
"When we argue, what do you think I believe about you in that moment?"
Then listen. No defending, no correcting the record, no fixing. Your only job is to say, "Tell me more about that."
Spend some time truly seeking to understand one another. Spouses who can listen to and defend one another's case create healthy marriages.
