If you or your spouse is affected by chronic pain, that likely means your marriage is too. Chronic pain is something no one plans for or ever thinks they will have to deal with. It’s not something that ever came up in premarital counseling, your pastor likely didn’t warn you of it, and you probably didn’t read about it in a book either.
The closest and truest warning we get is “for better or for worse, in sickness and in health”, but if we’re honest, none of us ever saw the hardship of sickness or pain that won’t go away coming, and therefore we likely didn’t prepare for it, as if you even could.

Chronic pain comes in like a thief and it often just takes what it wants to take, leaving you no choice but to settle for whatever it decides to leave behind. This is hard.
Pain will often steal your schedules, your freedom, your time, and your dreams of everything you thought life would look like.
As it steals from you, it also leaves behind little gifts that you didn’t ask for like hopelessness, high risk of depression, sleepless nights, and perpetual grief.
As discouraging as this all sounds, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it isn’t always a train!
You can learn to live with your illness or your injury with grace and with dependence upon Jesus and by his design, one another. It can steal. A lot but it can’t steal your joy and your hope. Those can only be given away by you.
If any of this resonates with you and you want to hear a personal story, our story about our journey with Jamie’s daily pain, listen to “When your Spouse has Chronic Pain, on the podcast today.
