Four Rounds to Reconnect This Fall
The air is getting crisper, the nights are getting shorter, and your schedule might be getting a little busier. That means it's time to add connecting with your spouse back onto the calendar‚ and fall gives you the perfect excuse.
One of our favorite things to do as a couple this time of year is sit out back with all the necessary s'more supplies and cozy up around a blazing firepit. There's something about the snap and crackle of the fire, the warmth on your face, that makes it easier to unplug, relax, and actually talk.
As marriage coaches, we recommend a couples reset at every season change. And there's no better setting for that reset than around a firepit.
a little more structure.
We built our Fireside Chats guide around four rounds, each one designed to move you a little deeper than small talk‚ from catching up, to real connection, to dreaming together again.
Round One Kindling
Start small. These are the easy, low-pressure questions that get the conversation going‚ the ones that remind you how to just enjoy talking to each other again before you go any deeper.
Round Two Warmth
Once the conversation is flowing, Warmth questions invite you to share what's actually been going on beneath the surface‚ what's been weighing on you, what you've been proud of, what you need from each other right now.
Round Three Embers
This round gets closer to the heart. Embers questions dig into the parts of your relationship that need tending‚ the things that have gone quiet, unspoken, or unattended, and are ready to be brought back into the light.
Round Four Rekindling
End the night looking forward. Rekindling questions turn your conversation toward hope‚ what you want to build together next, and how you want to keep choosing each other in this next season.
You don't have to get through all four rounds in one night. Some couples spread these out over several fireside evenings throughout the fall. The goal isn't to check a box‚ it's to keep coming back to each other.

Bring your listening ears. Plan on lots of listening and some seeking to understand. Use your conversation time as a chance to really hear your spouse‚ where their heart is, what's going on in their life underneath the surface.
Set the mood. Grab those flannels and some cozy socks. Designate a blanket just for fireside use. This is a kick-back-and-relax kind of time, and comfort is key. Smoosh those chairs together‚ you don't even need two.
Bring the food. You can't have a firepit without marshmallows for s'mores, but if that's not your thing, break out the nice mugs for some hot cocoa. And if all else fails, hand your man a meat stick‚ what man doesn't like jerky by a fire?
